Solving a Common Barn Problem in Central Kentucky
Working in Kentucky’s horse country always brings a unique set of challenges—and this recent project in Lexington was a great example.
This stall barn was experiencing ongoing issues with European Starlings and House Sparrows entering the structure and nesting in the upper hayloft area. While birds moving through breezeways and stalls is common and often unavoidable, the real problem begins when they find protected spaces to roost and reproduce.
In this case, birds were accessing framing cavities near the roofline and under the ridge cap—creating mess, contamination, and long-term maintenance concerns.

Understanding the Real Issue: Nesting Access
The key to solving bird problems in barns isn’t trying to eliminate every bird from the property—it’s removing access to the areas that make the structure attractive to them.
This barn had:
- Open access from stall areas into the hayloft above
- Protected cavities ideal for nesting
- Repeated use by starlings and sparrows
As long as birds could reach those upper areas, the problem would continue.

Our Solution: Strategic Bird Netting Installation
To address this, we installed multiple sections of low-visibility bird netting to separate the hayloft from the stall areas below.
This approach:
- Blocks access to nesting areas in the upper structure
- Maintains airflow and ventilation throughout the barn
- Preserves the natural function and appearance of the building
- Provides a durable, long-term solution rather than a temporary fix
The netting itself is designed to be inconspicuous once installed, allowing the barn to retain its open feel while quietly doing its job.

Why Bird Netting Works in Barn Environments
In structures like horse barns, complete exclusion isn’t always practical or necessary. Birds will still move through open breezeways and exterior spaces—but without access to safe nesting locations, their interest in the structure declines over time.
By focusing on:
- Behavior (why birds are there)
- Access points (how they get where they want to be)
we’re able to create solutions that last.
The Result: A Cleaner, Better-Functioning Barn
With the hayloft area now protected:
- Nesting activity is stopped
- Contamination of hay and stall areas is reduced
- Maintenance concerns are minimized
- The barn continues to function exactly as intended
It’s a straightforward solution in appearance, but one that’s built around how these species actually use structures.
